Model History

The Seiko Landmaster line was introduced in the early 1990s as part of Seiko’s professional adventure watch series, designed specifically for extreme environments and expedition use. Positioned alongside the famous Seiko Prospex diver models, the Landmaster watches were engineered for mountaineers, explorers, and polar expeditions.

This particular Landmaster Kinetic GMT (Ref. 5M45-6A01) was released in 1997 to commemorate the remarkable transpolar expedition of Japanese adventurer Mitsuro Ohba, who set a world record by crossing the Arctic region using only human-powered transportation. The watch celebrates this achievement with a distinctive world map dial, symbolizing global exploration.

The model features Seiko’s innovative AGS/Kinetic technology, which converts wrist motion into electrical energy to power a quartz movement—combining the accuracy of quartz with the self-charging concept of an automatic watch. Built with a lightweight titanium monobloc case, compass bezel, and GMT functionality, the Landmaster was designed as a serious tool watch for explorers and travelers alike.

Today, the Mitsuro Ohba Landmaster is one of the most collectible early Kinetic expedition models from Seiko.

Condition

This watch is in very nice overall condition. The titanium case and bracelet show only light signs of wear consistent with careful use. The original crystal is in scratch-free condition, and the dial with its distinctive world map graphic remains excellent and highly legible.

The watch features a monobloc case construction, typical for professional Landmaster models, contributing to its durability and water resistance. The 5M45 Kinetic movement has been serviced and fitted with a new capacitor, ensuring reliable operation.
