Model History
The first generation of the Seiko Sumo was introduced in 2007 in black, blue and orange dial variants. The SBDC005 is the distinctive orange version, produced primarily for the Japanese domestic market. Although it was not a limited edition, it is encountered considerably less often than its black and blue counterparts.
One of the defining features of the first-generation Sumo is the absence of the Prospex “X” logo found on later models, together with the characteristic cursive “Automatic” inscription. Its substantial yet ergonomically shaped case, highly legible hands and markers, and powerful luminous display helped establish the Sumo as one of Seiko’s most recognisable modern mechanical dive watches.
The watch is powered by Seiko’s in-house 6R15 automatic calibre, offering manual winding, hacking seconds, a date display and a power reserve of approximately 50 hours.
